Contra Costa Cinema opened its doors on June 27, 1986, in Martinez, California — and Top Gun was one of the films playing that very first week. Over the four decades since, the theatre has passed through a handful of owners, from Festival Enterprises to Mann Theatres, Signature Theatres, and Cinema West, which expanded the complex from five screens to ten with upgraded stadium seating along the way.
In December 2021, the theatre took a turn back to its roots, becoming independently owned and operated. Through every chapter and every change in ownership, it's stayed a neighborhood fixture — the place generations of Martinez families have gone to catch a movie.
Today, as Contra Costa Cinema celebrates 40 years in business, it continues that tradition as a true community theatre — locally owned, independently run, and still showing movies to the people who've been coming through its doors since 1986.
